A Simple Guide to Made For Me Literacy Special Education Reading Levels

May 4, 2026

A teacher trying to decide with level of curriculum she needs for her special education class

If you’ve ever looked at Made For Me Literacy and wondered, which level is right for your students, you’re not alone.

As MFML has grown over the years, so has the range of learners it supports. What started as a single bundle has evolved into a full system designed to meet students exactly where they are.

This guide will help you quickly understand each level so you can confidently choose what fits your classroom best.

Why the MFML Leveling System Matters

In a self-contained classroom, your students are rarely all working at the same level.

Some are just beginning to match and follow simple directions. Others are answering questions, sequencing stories, or writing sentences.

Made for me literacy curriculum is meticulously crafted for special learners. That’s why why it is designed as a leveled system, not a one-size-fits-all curriculum.

Each level builds on the one before it while keeping routines and activity types familiar.

Level A: Building Foundational Skills

Best for students working on early learning and foundational skills.

Level A supports students who are working on:

  • Matching and sorting
  • Following one-step directions
  • Recognizing letters, numbers, colors, and shapes
  • Beginning communication and engagement

You’ll see:

  • Errorless learning activities
  • Picture-to-picture and non-identical matching
  • Simple, predictable routines

This level is ideal for students who benefit from highly supported learning.

Level B: Developing Early Literacy Skills

Level B is best for students ready for structured literacy activities with support.

Students begin to:

  • Follow visual directions independently
  • Answer WH and yes/no questions
  • Identify story elements
  • Practice simple sentence writing

You’ll see:

  • Adapted books and comprehension activities
  • Task boxes and centers targeting K–2 skills
  • Writing with visual supports
  • Cross-curricular activities like crafts and hands-on learning

Level B bundles are similar in skill but vary in themes and content length.

Level C: Expanding Comprehension and Writing

Level C is best for students working on upper elementary adapted skills.

Students work on:

  • Answering higher-level comprehension questions
  • Using graphic organizers
  • Writing sentences and paragraphs with support
  • Understanding cause and effect and problem and solution

You’ll see:

  • More advanced reading response activities
  • Structured writing with supports
  • Centers targeting 3–5 adapted skills
  • Hands-on, predictable routines

How to Choose the Right Level

Instead of focusing on grade level, focus on what your students can do right now.

Ask yourself:

  • Can they match or answer questions?
  • Do they need errorless support or can they follow directions?
  • Are they working on words, sentences, or paragraphs?

Many classrooms use more than one level at the same time, and that is expected.

The goal is to support students at their current level while building independence.

What About Made For Me Math?

Made For Me Math is skill-based rather than leveled. It starts with foundational skills and builds into more advanced concepts over time.

Choosing the Right Level Does Not Have to Feel Overwhelming.

When you focus on your students’ current skills instead of their grade, the right fit becomes much clearer.

Made For Me Literacy was designed to grow with your classroom and support students at every stage.
